P U L S E

Celebrate Valentine’s day with P U L S E

Proudly presenting virtuoso piano duo Shane Thio & Nicholas Loh along side Percussion duo Eugene Toh & Yiang Shan.

The piano percussion quartet is fairly a new addition to the world of chamber music if you compare them to the more common woodwind or brass quintets, piano trios, and string quartets. As such, their repertoire starts from the early 20th century with its most famous work, The Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, Sz. 110, BB 115 by Bela Bartok (1937). Since its premiere in America, it has inspired composers (mostly from America) to write more for this combination of instruments.

Having already perform the Bartok to astounding success, the quartet now return to the stage to present a program of minimalist music by prolific American composers Steve Reich and Johan Adams. These works will be interjected by two mesmerising works for solo percussion.

Proudly supported by National Arts Council (NAC).

Repertoire

Sipping a cup of tea paired with biscuits after a hearty dinner one evening was the setting for what was the discovery and conceptualisation of PULSE. Amongst the large pile of music for piano duos, John Adams's glorious Hallelujah Junction stood out clearly as the work that had to be presented. Pairing this piece was no easy feat. To find a work that would complement yet stand out on its own was the aim of the program. Steve Reich's Quartet for Two Pianos and Two Vibraphones was a fitting partner in presenting American minimalism. With its recognisable episodes of jazz harmonies and coincidental moments of orientalism, Quartet is a rhythmic and harmonic journey through repeated figures.

Two interludes give respite to the ear and also showcase the dominating sounds and rhythmic charm of untuned percussion.

Program
